Elena Minaeva’s project “Ghosts of Daytime and Nighttime” is presented by the MMOMA as part of the program “Debut.” The artist employs a variety of media and visual forms to tell the spectator of situations everyone is familiar with: a person teetering on the brink of the real and the unreal, in between the physical and the ephemeral, the conscious and the subconscious.

A human being is born innocent. He is born free of any experience of knowing the world; he has neither an ability of adjusting himself to the world nor a need to look for his destiny. However, man is forced to distort his originally pure mental world by putting on guises, which are bound to fit and grow inside his essence as he forms ties with the outside world in the course of time.

The exhibition project “Ghosts of Daytime and Nighttime” is about certain situations urging one to distance from oneself in a bid to separate an untainted image from the guises and ghosts concocted of light and shade, the ones that surround the person in his daily life. Videos and graphic works help the artist give shape to impressions stemming from her reflection on the subject of true ego.
