The Moscow Museum of Modern Art together with the MMOMA Free Workshops School of Contemporary Art presents a group exhibition titled «Workshop 20’18: Secret Sign Systems».
The uniqueness of modern culture and the diversity of its manifestations are based not only on collective memory, conventional sign systems, the symbolism of the visual arts and literature, but also on the generation of new and the reinterpretation of the already existing cultural codes permeating our lives. The exhibition curator Daria Kamyshnikova suggests paying attention to mental associations, or «ciphers», which once established influence our perception of reality:
«When I was a very small girl, I lived with my mother in a house not far from a confectionery factory and very close to the Moscow racecourse. It was the whimsical combination of vanilla scents and horse manure that became the code that opens the secret door to the vivid memories and emotions of my childhood. Such secret ciphers permeate our lives.»
The participants of the 18th «Workshop» reflect on the surrounding verbal and non-verbal symbols and signs which serve as a tool for understanding the self and the world. This exhibition is a special project of the 6th Moscow International Biennale for Young Art.
The «Workshop» project has been held annually by the Moscow Museum of Modern Art and the MMOMA Free Workshops School of Contemporary Art since 2001. Every year the show brings attention to new names on the Russian art scene. As in previous years, participating in the show are students and graduates of the MMOMA Free Workshops School of Contemporary Art.

FREE WORKSHOPS SCHOOL OF CONTEMPORARY ART
The Free Workshops School of Contemporary Art is an educational platform for young artists and curators working in the field of contemporary art. The school was set up by a group of artists and art historians as part of the Museum in 1992. The school’s students study theoretical and practical aspects of contemporary art under eminent lecturers, distinguished figures of culture, philosophers and theorists of contemporary art. The school offers its support to young artists at different stages of their artistic career through organizing group and solo exhibitions and acquiring their works for the museum’s collection.
