The Moscow Museum of Modern Art together with the Free Workshops School of Contemporary Art presents a solo exhibition by Daria Barybina titled «Kingkongs». The project is held within the MMOMA Program for Support to Young Artists.
Daria Barybina believes that contemporary viewers are constantly exposed through art, politics and mass culture to visual content that contains varying degrees of violence. In her work Barybina presents the heroes of our time who, nurtured by society, are its extension. Barybina uses the traditional medium of oil painting to bring the viewer in contact with a new mythology and its protagonists. The versatility of the language of painting allows the artist to depict various sides of contemporaneity and reflect on human experience and different worldviews.
The exhibition includes Barybina’s paintings, works on paper and videos created in the course of the last two years. The artist draws on and re-interprets familiar compositions of previous generations of artists. By alluding to classical subjects such as Théodore Géricault’s portraits and the battle scenes of Paolo Uccello and Leonardo da Vinci, her works demonstrate the continuity of art and at the same time highlight the typical features of contemporary figures. In the «Ultimate Fighting» series, the monumental piece «Kingkongs» and the graphical work «Battle on the Klyazma River», the artist plays down the personal and subjective in order to bring out the air of contemporaneity instantiated in its heroes: frightened pet dogs, wrestlers and fighters.
Daria Barybina was born in 1988 in the city of Orekhovo-Zuyevo. She graduated from the Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute (2011) and the MMOMA Free Workshops School of Contemporary Art (2015). Currently Barybina is studying at the Rodchenko Art School (Sergey Bratkov’s studio). «Kingkongs» is the first solo exhibition of the artist. Barybina works are featured in the collection of the Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow.
