Moscow Museum of Modern Art presents Mirrors, a three-part project organized for the IX Andrei Tarkovsky International Film Festival and consisting of an exhibition of Nelli Fomina’s sketches for Andrei Tarkovsky’s films (Stalker, Solaris, The Mirror) and photos from the set; Timofey Kolesnikov’s Reflections project, connecting the past and the present in a series of photos, taken at the festival in 2015; and a video art program curated by Antonio Geusa.
It was not only in cinema that Andrei Tarkovsky was ahead of its time. His oeuvre is a source of inspiration for many contemporary artists. The exhibition in MMOMA bringing several contemporary art projects in one space, demonstrates their connection with each other and with great works of the past. Works by different artists are designed to create a three-dimensional picture of Andrei Tarkovsky’s universe.
Tarkovsky: Film Characters and Images held on the first floor of MMOMA in Ermolaevsky Lane, taking over from Andrei Tarkovsky International Film Festival, will feature photos and sketches by costume designer Nelli Fomina, who worked with Tarkovsky on Solaris, The Mirror and Stalker. Also presented in the show will be one of the costumes made after her sketch. This part of the project immerses the viewer in memories and reflections on the famous films. The exhibition has been previously shown at the IX Andrei Tarkovsky International Film Festival in Plyos.
Reflections, which will occupy the second floor, features photos of guests and participants of Andrei Tarkovsky Festival, made by Timofey Kolesnikov. Among them are Alisa Freindlich and Alexander Sokurov, and Chinese director Miaoyan Zhang, the winner of the Grand Prix of the Film Festival in 2015. The mirror design of the exhibition continues the theme of the photo project, as if creating a corridor between the past, the present and the future. In this corridor, those who have already gone down in history meet those who may become a legend in the future.
The project continues with a retrospective show of Victor Alimpiev and A View from Another Window: a video art program curated by Antonio Geusa,. The best works by young video artists exploring the passages between reality and art will by featured on the third floor.
The fourth floor will become a temporary auditorium, where talks by curator and art historian Antonio Geusa, film critic Andrei Plakhov, producer Alexei Bokov, photographer Timofey Kolesnikov, director and script writer Pavel Lungin among others will take place.
Mirrors celebrates the 15th anniversary of BOKOVFACTORY production agency.
